"You don't want to see them?"

"Did I say that?"

"Well, then, I don't understand." Wash's forehead crinkled, and Zoe thought he looked adorable when he was confused. "Are you ashamed of me?"

"No," she said, more sharply than intended. But secretly, sometimes, she wondered what her life would be like if she'd made different choices. If she'd never left Olympia, never joined the Browncoats, would she be like Allie now, mother of five strong children, with a ranch to call her own?

Her sister had done well for herself, married up and took the family with her, all connection to a rebel soldier erased by her husband's name.

All Zoe had were scars and nightmares; a husband with a liking for ugly shirts and bad jokes; Mal and Serenity; and the hope that the next job wouldn't be the last.

Visiting her family always made her pensive, made her reevaluate the choices she'd made. And she always came to the same conclusion.

She wouldn't trade any of it -- the scars, the nightmares, certainly not the husband -- for horses and land and pretty dresses.

Wash still looked uncertain, fidgeting with the buttons on his shirt, watching her warily.

"Zoe, light of my life and joy of all creation--"

"Husband, I do believe you ought to stop talking gorram nonsense, and get your ass over here and kiss me, mâshàng."

"Ooh, I love it when you give me orders," he answered, pulling her close.

They were both smiling when their lips met, and Zoe knew that, whatever the day brought, she'd never regret this.
